The Catwalk Business Diagnostic

The Catwalk Business Diagnostic

Understanding comes before action, and evidence comes before opinion.

A focused examination of the business and marketing conditions behind your results, so you know where the real problem is before you spend more trying to fix it. The Diagnostic answers one question as completely as the evidence allows: why is marketing and growth performing the way it is, and what is actually causing it? It is a business and marketing diagnostic. It is not a full organizational or cultural study.

Written to be read before anything is decided. There is nothing to schedule to continue.

Who It Is For

You are a good fit if the numbers are not moving the way they should.

You are a good fit if marketing spend is not returning what it should, if positioning feels unclear, if customer acquisition has slowed, or if you have changed tactics repeatedly without the underlying result moving. It suits owners who would rather understand the whole picture than keep acting on the most visible part of it.

Research Insight

In a four-year study of 62 corporate transformations, roughly three-quarters failed to deliver their intended benefits, with misdiagnosis of the underlying problem implicated as often as poor execution. Understanding the condition first is the part most often skipped.

N. Anand & Jean-Louis Barsoux, “What Everyone Gets Wrong About Change Management,” Harvard Business Review, 2017.

Clarity, not implementation, is the deliverable.

What It Examines

The parts of the business that shape marketing performance.

The Diagnostic looks at how clearly the business is positioned against its alternatives, whether the customer experience and reputation support the sale, whether the website, search visibility, and content do their job, where attention and money are actually going, and whether decisions get turned into plans that hold. I gather what can be verified from outside the business and combine it with your own account of what is happening inside it. The findings are ranked by what matters most.

The Business Diagnostic examines the business, customer, market, marketing, and commercial conditions affecting performance. It does not measure employee sentiment or establish organization-wide cultural conditions.

The Process

Five steps, from inquiry to the Executive Brief.

The process moves in order. Nothing is skipped, and no conclusion appears before the evidence that supports it.

StartInquiryA short form. Not a commitment, just the start of a conversation.

ExamineThe DiagnosticI gather the evidence, examine it, and build the findings.
DeliverThe Executive BriefDelivered and walked through with you.

Most Business Diagnostics are completed within 10 to 15 business days after intake is approved. If the scope or available evidence requires more time, I will confirm that with you before the work proceeds.

The Deliverable

An Executive Brief, built to support a decision.

The Brief is how the Diagnostic is delivered. It supports a decision, not implementation. It is not a status report, not a presentation, and not a pitch. It carries no implementation plan, because that is a separate decision you make only once you understand the situation completely. It is organized the way you read.

A single document, written to be read in one sitting and returned to as decisions are made. It is built to be acted on, not filed. A strong Brief is not a long list of recommendations. It is a smaller number of decisions you can realistically act on.

Findings

Finding 01

Finding 02

Evidence base

A representative page. Layout and structure are real; confidential findings are redacted.

How I Reason

Every conclusion is earned, traceable, and honest about its certainty.

Evidence before opinion

I do not begin with a conclusion and look for support. Findings are built from evidence, examined across several domains, and weighted by what matters most.

Traceable to its source

Every conclusion can be traced back to what it rests on. Where the evidence is strong, I say so plainly. Where it is not yet conclusive, I say that too.

Judgment stays human

Artificial intelligence may assist research, organization, and synthesis. It never replaces judgment. I remain accountable for every conclusion.

Research Insight

Confirmation bias, the tendency to seek evidence that supports what a person already believes, is among the most thoroughly documented biases in decision-making research. Building findings from evidence, rather than toward a conclusion, is how the work guards against it.

Nickerson, Review of General Psychology, 1998.

Evidence, Not Testimonial

What a Diagnostic reveals, presented as evidence.

Client engagements are protected by confidentiality. When examples are published, they appear here in a fixed structure, anonymized and presented as evidence rather than testimonial. No business is identified, and no confidential information is disclosed.

Catwalk publishes evidence only when it can be presented honestly and without compromising a client. Until an engagement can be shared on those terms, this section holds its structure rather than its conclusions. Evidence before opinion applies to my own claims first.

What Remains

The Diagnostic ends. The Brief remains.

Most engagements leave a deliverable. This one leaves a document you can act on and return to, built to be read once and used, not filed.

The Diagnostic and the Blueprint

Two separate outputs. Only one, if that is all you need.

The Diagnostic explains what the evidence shows and what deserves attention. The Blueprint is the separate next step that turns the approved findings into priorities, sequencing, ownership, first actions, and a 90-day direction, including what to hold off on. You do not have to decide about the Blueprint until the Diagnostic is done and you have seen what it found.

The Diagnostic ends with an answer. The Blueprint begins with your decision to act on it.

Pricing

What is included at each level.

The Business Diagnostic methodology is standardized. Every business receives the same disciplined engagement. The scope of that engagement is shaped by the complexity of the business: the number of stakeholders, the interviews required, the markets involved, and the evidence available to examine.

Expanded ScopeDetermined after intakeLarger or more complex businesses may need an expanded scope. I will tell you what it involves and what it costs before any work begins.

Every business is different. The methodology remains consistent, while the scope of each engagement is tailored to the complexity of your business. The full investment is laid out plainly on the Begin page.

The First Step

Start with the problem you actually have.

The Business Diagnostic is the first step for owners whose main concern is marketing performance, positioning, or customer acquisition. If your harder problem is internal, the Free IBI is a better starting point. If you want to understand how I work first, that is open for you to read.
